Stick drift on PS5 and Xbox controllers: why it happens and how it's fixed

Character or camera moves by itself? That's stick drift. The causes, what you can try yourself, and when the stick module needs replacing.

You're not touching anything, yet the character slowly walks sideways or the camera turns by itself. That's stick drift, one of the most common faults on DualSense (PS5), DualShock 4 (PS4), Xbox controllers and Joy-Cons.

Why drift happens

Inside the stick are position sensors (potentiometers). Over time:

The more you play fast-paced games, the faster the sticks wear. That's normal wear.

What you can try yourself

  1. Calibration. On Xbox and in some games you can set a dead zone for the stick, so slight drift stops getting in the way.
  2. Update the controller firmware through the console.
  3. Blow around the stick with compressed air and rotate it in circles. It sometimes clears dust for a while.

We don't recommend opening the controller yourself or spraying alcohol or WD-40 inside: you can damage ribbon cables, buttons and vibration motors, and liquid washes away lubrication.

When the module needs replacing

If the drift is strong, comes back after calibration, or the stick doesn't return to centre, only replacing the stick module helps. The technician desolders the old module and fits a new one. Afterwards the controller works like new.

Repair or a new controller

A new original DualSense costs noticeably more than replacing one stick. If everything else (buttons, battery, vibration, port) is fine, repair is the better deal.
