PS5 or PS4 loud and overheating: when it needs a clean
Why a PlayStation roars like a vacuum cleaner and shuts down from overheating, how often to clean it, and why overheating is dangerous for a console.
The fan roars even in the menu, the case is hot, and in games you get an overheating warning or the PlayStation shuts down. It's almost always dust.
Why consoles overheat
- Dust clogs the heatsink and fan, so air can't flow.
- Dried thermal paste between the processor and heatsink (common on a PS4 after 3–5 years).
- A bad spot: a closed cabinet, a carpet, right against a wall, next to a radiator.
- A hot room: in a Batumi summer without air conditioning, the console struggles.
Signs it's time for a clean
- the fan is loud even in the menu;
- a weak but very hot airflow from the rear vents;
- overheating warnings and random shutdowns;
- stutters in games.
What you can do yourself
- Place the console in the open, with 10–15 cm of free space on all sides.
- The PS5 has dust catchers behind the side panels that you can vacuum following Sony's instructions.
- Don't stand the console upright on something soft.
We don't recommend fully opening the console yourself: the PS5 uses liquid metal instead of thermal paste, and careless disassembly can spill it and short the board.
What the technician does
Opens the console, cleans the fan and heatsink, replaces the thermal paste and pads (on the PS5, handles the liquid metal carefully), and checks temperatures after reassembly.
How often
Every 1–2 years; more often if you have pets or the console sits low.
If overheating has already damaged the console
Common results are no picture, the PS4 "blue light of death", or boot errors. Then the board needs diagnosing. More: PS5 no picture.
