iPhone keeps restarting by itself: 6 causes and what to do
Why an iPhone restarts on its own — in a loop, under load or in the cold — and how to tell whether it's software, the battery or the board.
Your iPhone goes dark and shows the Apple logo mid-call, when you open the camera, or just lying on the table. Sometimes in an endless loop. Here are the causes, from simple to serious.
1. Software glitch
Especially after an iOS update or a new app. What to do: - update to the latest iOS; - delete apps installed just before the restarts began; - check free storage: with less than 1–2 GB free, the system becomes unstable.
2. Worn battery
The most common hardware cause. An old battery can't deliver peak current (camera, games, cold), so the phone restarts. Signs: health below 80%, shutdowns at 20–30%. More: battery health at 80%.
3. Aftermarket or poorly fitted battery
A cheap battery can fail under load.
4. Overheating
In the sun, or gaming while charging, an iPhone can shut down to protect itself. Not a fault, but regular overheating harms the battery — see phone gets hot in the heat.
5. Damage after water or a drop
Oxidation on the board, cracked solder joints, damaged cables. Restarts start a day to a week after the incident.
6. Board fault
If the iPhone restarts exactly every 3 minutes, it's often a signal from a sensor (for example on the charging flex) that the system can't see. Only a technician can diagnose these reliably.
If the iPhone is in a restart loop
Try a force restart (iPhone 8 and later: quickly press volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the logo appears). If that doesn't help, don't restore the phone through a computer before you have a backup: you can lose your data. More: iPhone stuck on the Apple logo.
What we do
We check the battery, the restart logs, the flex cables and the board. Often a new battery or flex cable fixes it. The inspection is free; board diagnostics cost 100 ₾ only if you decline the repair. More: iPhone logic board repair and battery replacement.
