Slow laptop: how to speed it up and will an SSD help?
Why a laptop takes ages to boot and lags, what you can do for free, and why swapping the hard drive for an SSD is the most noticeable upgrade.
The laptop takes five minutes to start, the browser hangs and the fan is noisy. Before buying a new one, see whether the old one can be sped up.
Free fixes
- Startup apps: Task Manager β Startup β disable everything you don't need.
- Free space: keep at least 15β20% of the system drive free.
- Updates for Windows and drivers.
- Virus scan with the built-in Windows Defender.
- Browser: dozens of tabs and extensions eat memory β close what you don't need.
If it's still slow, it's the hardware
A hard drive (HDD) instead of an SSD
The main reason laptops older than 4β5 years are slow. Easy to check: Task Manager β Performance β Disk. If it says "HDD" and disk usage often hits 100%, that's it.
Swapping the HDD for an SSD is the most noticeable upgrade: the laptop boots in seconds instead of minutes and apps open several times faster. Your system and files can be moved to the new drive.
Not enough RAM
With 4 GB, modern Windows and a browser struggle. 8 GB is the minimum, 16 GB is comfortable. Many laptops let you add memory, but on some thin models it's soldered to the board and can't be upgraded.
Overheating
If the laptop slows down after 10β20 minutes and gets noisy, the cooling is clogged with dust. More: laptop overheating and noisy.
Is an upgrade worth it
If the processor isn't ancient, SSD + RAM + a clean is a sensible alternative to a new laptop. If the laptop is 8β10+ years old, it can make more sense to sell it and buy new β see sell your laptop.
